Gross margin
Revenue minus the direct cost of what was sold, usually expressed as a percentage of revenue.
The formula
Gross margin % = (revenue − cost of goods sold) ÷ revenue × 100
If a product sells for €100 and costs €70 to buy or make, the gross margin is €30, or 30%.
Why it matters in sales
Two deals of the same value can be worth very different amounts to the business. Margin by client, product or rep shows where the profit actually comes from — and which discounts are quietly eating it.
Who should see it
Margin is sensitive. Many companies let reps see sales but not margins, or only their own. Any tool that answers questions about margins should respect the same boundaries.
Where emily fits
emily can answer margin questions from your ERP — and only for people allowed to see them: access is set per person, company and topic, so a rep limited to sales gets an honest "that's outside your access". See access by person, company and topic and emily for owners.
